presentation
The smallest and oldest Republic in the world was founded in 301, by the Saint bearing the same name, on the Titano Mountain. It has an area of (just) 61 sq. km and a population just over 30,000 inhabitants. San Marino is divided into nine Castles (or municipalities), each bearing the name of its chief town: San Marino (capital city), Acquaviva, Borgo Maggiore, Chiesanuova, Domagnano, Faetano, Fiorentino, Montegiardino and Serravalle. The largest centre in the Republic is Dogana, which is not an autonomous castle but a “curazìa” (hamlet) of Serravalle. Since 301, and through many ups and downs, San Marino has been able to keep its territorial, political and economic independence, thus becoming an island of tranquillity in the Italian territory.
